For 2009, Bentley stays with the trio of AWD Continentals. The Continental GT is one of the few coupes available with AWD regardless of price. It is an impressive performer, and yet still manages 17mpg highway. That's a mark of excellent design; getting a 5,000 lb. car with 552hp to that level means the vehicle is very efficient. Owned by Volkswagen since 1998, the Continental's powerplant is actually the same W12 engine that has powered VW's high-end Phaeton. The Continental is available as a convertible; the GTC variation, or as a sedan; the Continental Flying Spur. The newer "Speed" options on the Continentals boosts power up to some 600hp. An exquisite design, the full time AWD Continental rides on progressive air spings, and has a 6 speed automatic transmission.
Bentley AWD Choices
The Continental GT series supercar has top speed of 198mph and
0-60mph time of just 4.6 seconds. The Continental GT develops a maximum torque of 479 lb-ft at 1600rpm,
yielding a very responsive throttle pedal. Twin low-inertia turbochargers are a key factor in producing the flat torque curve, characteristic of every Bentley. AWD is standard in GT, GTC (convertible) and Flying Spur (sedan) configurations. Prices start around
$197,000
The Continental coupe series uses a 12-cylinder engine with four banks of three cylinders in a W formation. The result is a shorter, more compact engine . Twin turbochargers boost the power output to 552bhp. AWD is standard in GT, GTC (convertible) and Flying Spur (sedan) configurations. Prices start around
$209,000
The Continental Flying Spur sedan uses the same 12-cylinder engine as other Continentals. Performance is therefore much the same. The coachwork of the Flying Spur is simply superb; it is probably the best looking luxury sedan in the world. The long 120.7 inch wheelbase helps provide the ride comfort you would expect in such a motorcar. Prices will be comparable to the coupe. The Arnage seems to be taking over the Bentley sedan offering, so Flying Spur availability may be poor. If you have been on the fence about about a luxury AWD sedan, better locate one now before they're gone, as there is no AWD option for Arnage.
