Lamborghini

Founder Ferruccio Lamborghini had extraordinarily high standards. This is a man who was actually disappointed by driving a Ferrari, and so he built his own supercars. The first Lambo was introduced in 1963. The firm has changed hands a few times over the years, and is currently owned by the most unlikely parent, Volkswagen! (Recent upheaval at VW corporate HQ may make Lamborghini's future uncertain though a new Lambo SUV may be in the works...)
But Lamborghini has always meant supercars with flair. Perhaps the only thing more important to this Italian car maker than sheer power has been outrageous exterior design. The current Murciélago and Gallardo models deliver both in spades. But chances are you didn't know that Lamborghini also managed to pack their exquisite machines with all wheel drive! Now admittedly, I started this site to help people find practical solutions to real world driving problems, and no one in their right mind would dream of bringing either of these cars out in even humid conditions, but even desk bound webmasters need to have fun too!

Lamborghini AWD Choices

Lamborghini makes 2 cars. The Murciélago and the Gallardo. That's it. Both come with AWD as standard equipment. The Murciélago is now designated as the LP640 which means basically, rear engined, 640hp. This differentiates it from earlier models which had slightly lower power output. It is available as either a coupe or roadster (convertible). The Gallardo is also available in both formats, but the convertible version is called the Spyder.
2007 Murcielago LP640 The Murcielago LP640 is powered by a 640hp V12, equipped with a 6 speed manual gearbox. It is built on a steel tube frame with carbon fiber componants. Both coupe and Roadster versions have identical drivetrains. Ceramic carbon brakes (Formula 1 style) are available as an option. Hard to believe, but it is rumored that a set of snow tires for the rear axle is under development to replace the immense 335/30R18 Pirelli's. Not yet available, prices for the 2007 Murcielago LP640 are expected to start around
$350,000. There is also a designer version available; the Murcielago Versace coupe. (Expect the roadster to add about $50,000)
2007 Gallardo

The Gallardo has two body styles available; the coupe and the Spyder. Both are powered by a smaller V10 engine, developing 500 hp in the coupe and 520 hp in the Spyder. Chassis and body parts on the Gallardo are aluminum, helping keep costs lower. Also using the 6 speed manual gearbox, the Gallardo makes 0 - 60mph runs in under 5 seconds effortless. Gallardo prices for 2007 are expected to start in the
$200,000 range.
