2008 Kia SportageThe 2009 Sportage builds off of the award-winning 2008 Sportage, named’s “Best Bang for the Buck.” The Sportage LX with AWD is equipped with the base 140hp 2.0 liter 4 banger and only comes with a 5 speed manual gearbox. 2008 Grand Vitara Xsport The Suzuki Grand Vitara 5 door SUV is in the 3rd year of its second generation design. This is a REAL crossover because it has elements of BOTH a unibody AND a full frame chassis. That design allows the vehicle to tolerate more off road abuse than most of its pure unibody competition. 4wd versions are available in Premium, X Sport and Luxury trim levels. The least expensive AWD Grand Vitara is the Premium version, and it mates a manual transmission with a 166hp, 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine. This combination gets the "single mode" 4wd system, while V6 versions get the more sophisticated Full Time 4 mode system. The base (Premium) Grand Vitara with the 4wd option and manual gearbox starts at $20,349, but only in RED! All other colors are priced higher! SCAM!!!

2009Toyota Matrix SThe 2009 AWD equipped Toyota Matrix S will include standard power door locks and windows, intermittent rear window wiper, AM/FM/CD with MP3 capability and six speakers. It comes with a 4 speed automatic instead of the 5 speed connected to the same 2.4 liter engine of the base Matrix. 2009 Pontiac Vibe The 2009 Pontiac Vibe with AWD has a 158hp 2.4 liter inline 4 cylinder motor with a 4 speed transmission. The hoped for manual transmission option is not there for the AWD version. This car is a sister to the Toyota Matrix, and shares that car's Corolla based platform and driveline. This as close as anyone is going to get to an AWD GM car. Although its still called a compact SUV, to me, its a compact wagon. Because it is a joint project with Toyota, it is not shared across the rest of the GM lineup. The baseline AWD Vibe starts at $20,475.

The EX comes equipped with better audio, more minor amenities, and nicer wheels. 2009 Ford Escape Ford's 5 passenger Escape is also built on a unibody, and I can't believe I missed this vehicle for the past 2 years. Sorry. There are 3 trim levels - XLS, XLT, XLD plus the Escape Hybrid. All are available in AWD. In 2008, Ford updated the cosmetics but this year, Escape gets some needed mechanical upgrades. The base 4 banger grew to 2.5 liters, adding 20 hp in process, while the 3.0 liter V6 gains 40 ponies. To add to your driving pleasure, Ford upped the transmission to a new 6 speed design that actually improved fuel economy by 2 mpg. This is a much improved vehicle for 09. The 4 cylinder Escape XLS with 4WD can be in your driveway for just $21,121.

2008 Ford FusionThe Ford Fusion SE sedan is the entry level AWD version The same basic design as the Lincoln Zephyr and Mercury Milan, the chassis was originally used for the Mazda 6 sedan. Ford added about 2 inches of wheelbase for the Fusion. The AWD option automatically upgrades the engine from the I4 to the 3 liter Duratec motor, with a 6 speed automatic transmission and anti-lock brakes. Fusion's AWD system shuts off on the highway where traction isn’t usually a concern to improve efficiency. Look for an early release of the 2010 Fusion Hybrid by spring. Prices for the Fusion SE 3.0 AWD start much lower for 09 at $21,713

Available in two models, S and SL, each has a standard 170hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and the Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission). A smaller version of Murano, the styling exercise could have done a better job on the nose profile. The primary KEY FEATURE is what Nissancalls their Intuitive All Wheel Drive System. It applies power to the rear wheels only when the vehicle isn't in straight line "cruise" mode. The base AWD Rogue is priced at $21,420.

2011 Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V is little changed for 2011 she's getting a little long in the tooth, too. . The CR-V with AWD is not a separate model in the Honda line. Interestingly, the CRV EX-L (which is a luxury moniker, not a long wheelbase option) suffers 2 " of LOST headroom when compared to other CRV's. 2009 Toyota RAV4The Toyota RAV4 is in its second generation, after essentially spawning the mini-ute market several years ago. For 2009, Toyota's RAV4 tag line is, "Too intelligent to be categorized". The BASE AWD RAV4 with a 4 speed automatic gearbox is still called the 4432 model. But this year they do a better job of humanizing the variants. The BASE AWD version starts at $22,900
